Mobile phones have favored the interests of social media in Africa. According to Mary Meeker, an influential Internet analyst, mobile Internet and social media are the fastest-growing areas of the technology industry worldwide, and she predicts that mobile Internet use will soon overtake fixed Internet use.
Studies suggest that when Africans go online (predominantly with their mobile phones) they spend much of their time on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and so on). Sending and reading e-mails, reading news and posting research queries have become less important activities for Africans.
So, CNN released a video to explain how many people use Social Media in Africa. This video shows that :
9% of the continent use Social Media according to agency called “we are social“;
80 % goes using updating their status by their cell phones;
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are some of the top Social Media sites;
There are 120 million Facebook account in Africa;
Another study reveals and confirms the expansion of Facebook and Twitter in Africa.

Seychelles is the country that has highest Facebook penetration rates across Africa;
The Egypt is the country that has the most users on Facebook (10,669,020 users);
One survey in The north in Egypt showed that the amount of Social Media accounts has increased of 33 percent in 2014. Another survey found that 64% of Social Media users in Egypt are between 18 and 34 years old;
Among country users, 3,2 hours a day South Africans are among the world leaders in time spent on Social Media;
Twitter is the most used in South Africa (43,67%);
Social Media is a daily part of life in Africa for a growing number of people;
International News is the main subject of Information on Twitter (76%).
Except Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn is also developed. Africans used it to interact with people from professional work area.
According to Ethel Cofie, South Africa (2,6 millions) and Nigeria (1,1 million) have the most LinkedIn users in Africa. Additional analysis reveals some LinkedIn aspect about this continent.
There are over 7.5 million Africans on LinkedIn;
Over 20% Africans on LinkedIn are entry-level professionals;
Over 60% of Africans on LinkedIn are from South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt.
All studies show that Africa has progressed in the Social Media use. South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria have the most users in Africa. If an Organization want to implement a product or a service, it is important to know and to understand Social Media habit of Africans.
